WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?
Neurofeedback; Brain Training Made Easy
Welcome to New Mind Kentucky, where we provide an innovative solution called neurofeedback—a simple and effective brain training technique. Neurofeedback, also known as EEG Biofeedback, is a cutting-edge, non-invasive method that teaches the brain to function in a more balanced and optimal way. By influencing the brain's electrical energy production and distribution, neurofeedback helps create healthier patterns and enhances overall well-being.
The brain produces electrical impulses across four distinct frequency bands, namely Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta. These bands reveal which areas of the brain are active and which frequencies are required for specific tasks or activities. For example, when engaged in focused tasks like balancing checkbooks or following instructions, the brain relies on faster frequencies called Beta. Conversely, when winding down and seeking relaxation after a long day, slower brainwave frequencies called Alpha come into play. Neurofeedback aims to enhance the brain's ability to self-regulate, maintain flexibility, and smoothly transition between states of relaxation and arousal. By improving attention regulation, emotional regulation, and affect regulation, the central nervous system can resume normal functioning.
The Neurofeedback Process
During a neurofeedback session, sensors are placed on the head and ears to record brainwave activity. Advanced equipment amplifies the electrical impulses and categorizes them into the four key frequency bands. Using sophisticated computer software, a personalized protocol is developed to address each individual's unique needs. Throughout the session, a neurofeedback clinician monitors the raw EEG signal and the chosen frequency bands. Exercises can be performed with eyes open or closed. With eyes open, clients engage with videos or games that respond to the brain's desired frequency increase and decrease. In exercises with eyes closed, the software translates brainwaves into sound frequencies, which the client listens to. Positive changes are reinforced through auditory feedback. At the end of the 30-minute training session, the clinician shares and discusses the Training Review Screen, providing valuable insights.
Why does Neurofeedback Work?
Neurofeedback capitalizes on the brain's inherent ability to reshape itself through neuroplasticity—a process by which the brain forms new connections and strengthens pathways when acquiring new skills. Neurofeedback leverages this same learning mechanism, known as operant conditioning, where responses are controlled by their consequences. Essentially, neurofeedback creates optimal learning conditions, fostering awareness of healthier brainwave patterns, providing reinforcement for positive changes, and enabling ample practice during training sessions.
How Will You Know Which Frequency Bands and Which Areas of My Brain to Train?
At New Mind Kentucky, we prioritize qEEG-guided Neurofeedback. This entails gathering data on the electrical activity of specific brain locations. By placing sensors on your head, resembling a swim cap, we measure brainwave activity across various frequency bands. This process involves approximately 5 minutes of quiet sitting with eyes closed and an additional 5 minutes with eyes open. Our advanced equipment then analyzes this information, generating a Brain Map—a visual representation highlighting areas of excessive or insufficient activity. The Brain Map, along with the client's input, forms the basis for developing a tailored training plan.
Why Does Neurofeedback Help with Various Conditions?
Numerous disorders arise from dysfunctional brain patterns. Extensive research has demonstrated that the brain can restructure itself and adopt more adaptive patterns at any age, leading to improved symptoms. Neurofeedback targets imbalances and alters brain pathways rather than focusing on specific disorders. This remarkable brain plasticity is particularly noticeable in cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, or other physical trauma. Regardless of whether certain brain areas are overactive or underactive, neurofeedback encourages self-regulation, promotes healthier brainwave patterns, and facilitates positive changes in thinking and behavior.
Can I Continue Neurofeedback While Taking Medication?
This is a common question posed by many prospective clients. The answer is yes! Many individuals pursue neurofeedback with the goal of reducing or discontinuing medication. We are happy to collaborate with your prescribing physician, but decisions regarding medication are made by you and your healthcare provider. Our role is to support individuals and parents seeking non-medication alternatives that offer transformative pathways to positive change.
